Structured data, plainly

Structured data describes the content of a page in a shared vocabulary, Schema.org, that search engines can read without ambiguity: this is a product, here is its price, this is an article, here is its author and date. Google recommends the JSON-LD format, a block of code inside a script tag, kept apart from the rest of the HTML and therefore easy to add.

This markup makes a page eligible for some rich results in Google: price and availability of a product, breadcrumbs instead of the URL, details of a local business. Eligible does not mean guaranteed: Google decides case by case, based on the quality of the page and the consistency of the markup.

Which type to choose

  • Organization: for the home page or about page, with your logo and social profiles.
  • LocalBusiness: for a shop or practice that receives the public, with address and opening hours.
  • Article: for a blog or news article, with the author and the publication and update dates.
  • FAQPage: for a page of visible questions and answers. Google now reserves FAQ rich results for some official sites, but the markup stays valid and describes the page.
  • Product: for a product page, with price, currency and availability.
  • BreadcrumbList: to show where the page sits in the site structure.

How to use it

Fill in at least the fields marked as required: the generator tells you which ones are missing. Then copy the whole block, script tag included, and paste it into the page head, or just before the closing body tag. Most CMSs offer a field for custom code. Finally, test the page URL in Google's Rich Results Test, which lists the types it detects and any errors.

Common mistakes

  • Marking up information that is not on the visible page: it goes against Google's guidelines and can lead to a manual action.
  • Adding invented ratings or reviews, or reviews a business gives itself.
  • Leaving a price or availability that no longer matches the product page.
  • Using relative image addresses, or dates in a local format instead of YYYY-MM-DD.
  • Stacking several Organization blocks with conflicting details on the same page.
