What Open Graph tags do

When someone pastes a link into a LinkedIn post, on Facebook, on X or in a messaging app, the platform reads the page to build a preview: an image, a title, sometimes a description. Open Graph tags, placed in the page head, tell it exactly what to show. Without them the platform guesses, and the preview often shows a truncated title, a badly cropped logo or no image at all.

The Open Graph protocol was created by Facebook and is used by most platforms. X reads its own twitter: tags when they exist, and falls back on the Open Graph tags otherwise.

The tags every page needs

  • og:title: the title of the preview, which can be catchier than the title written for Google.
  • og:description: a sentence or two that makes people want to click.
  • og:image: the full address of a 1200 × 630 pixel image, the size Facebook and LinkedIn recommend.
  • og:url and og:type: the reference address of the page and its kind, usually website or article.
  • twitter:card set to summary_large_image, to get a large image on X.

Why the preview does not change right away

Platforms cache the preview of an address. After you fix your tags, a new share can still show the old version for a while. LinkedIn and Facebook each offer an inspection tool, the Post Inspector and the Sharing Debugger, which reads the page again and refreshes the preview.

Common mistakes

  • An image declared with a relative address: platforms need the full URL, in https.
  • An image that is too small or the wrong shape, cropped at random in the preview.
  • The same og:title and image on every page of the site.
  • Tags added by a script in the browser: social media crawlers do not run JavaScript and never see them.
  • An image blocked by robots.txt or protected against display on other sites.
